Ashtown - Baile Ás

Station Broombridge; Dublin - © Huib Zegers - 2002

Ashtown is situated on the Western Suburban, between Phoenix Park and Broombridge.

Ashtown is a rapidly developing suburb. Situated on the Royal Canal, it is near the Navan Road. Many apartment schemes have been built here in recent years, transforming what was previously a rural area, indeed many roads in the area lack pavements.

Ashtown station was opened in 1902 for race specials at the now demolished Phoenix Park Race Course. It opened fully on 1 August 1902. It closed in 1934 but re-opened briefly in 1979 for the visit of Pope John Paul to Ireland in order to facilitate the large numbers who attended the open air mass in the Phoenix Park. It re-opened again on 11 January 1982.

The footbridge came from Midleton on the Youghal line.
